Up a quiet lane in Old Manali, Manu Temple feels very different from the busy parts of town. It is an old temple surrounded by mountain homes, cafés and pine/deodar-covered slopes, and the walk to it is part of the experience.
The temple is dedicated to Rishi Manu, and Manali itself is believed to have got its name from “Manu Alya” — the place where Manu lived. The present temple is known for its traditional stone-and-wood architecture.

Why Visit Manu Temple?
- The temple has a beautiful wood-and-stone Himalayan design with a slate roof.
- It sits in Old Manali, so you can easily combine the visit with cafés and local walks.
- The atmosphere is much quieter than Mall Road.
- The narrow lanes around the temple give you a nice glimpse of the older side of Manali.
For me, the best part isn’t just the temple. It’s walking slowly through Old Manali, looking at the old houses and stopping whenever you find a nice mountain view.

Cafés & Food
This is one of the nicest areas in Manali for café-hopping.
Cafe Kathmandu on Manu Temple Road is close to the Old Manali Bridge and has outdoor seating. Sunshine Cafe is a cosy option for breakfast, coffee and a relaxed meal. Cafe 1947, beside the Manalsu River, is worth visiting if you want food with a riverside setting and a more lively atmosphere.
If you want something simple and local rather than a fancy café, there are also small eateries around Manu Temple Road serving momos, thukpa, parathas and chai.

Weather & Best Time to Visit
Manu Temple can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes with the seasons.
- March–June: Pleasant days and comfortable weather for walking.
- July–August: Green and fresh after the rain, but expect showers and wet roads.
- September–November: Cool, clear and one of my favourite periods for Old Manali walks.
- December–February: Cold winter weather, with chances of snow around Manali.
Even in summer, mornings and evenings can be quite cool, so carrying a light jacket is a good idea.
Crowd & Off-Season
Old Manali gets busy during May–June, especially during school holidays, and again around Christmas and New Year.
For a calmer experience, try September–November or visit on a weekday. Early morning is especially nice if you want quiet temple surroundings and fewer people.
If You Have 2–4 Hours
Keep it simple:
Manu Temple → walk down through Old Manali → coffee at a café → Old Manali Bridge → sit beside the river → slow walk back.
You don’t need to cover too much. Give yourself time to enjoy the little lanes and mountain views.
